Sorry, wrong choice. Here is one of the oldest "On Demand" water heaters known.
John Lax (NBI's Chief Inspector) found this beauty in San Francisco. It has a patent date of 1894. It was installed second hand in this house in 1943 and has been in continuous operation since.
Here it is with the doors open. Notice the heating coils inside. When you turned on the hot water faucet, the gas fire kicks on and starts heating the coils, which would in turn heat the water. The owner is remodeling his garage and is being forced to replace this beauty because it doesn't meet current plumbing standards.
